The Health ministry of Ivory Coast has banned skin-whitening creams due to health concerns in the country.
The ban, which was made official on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, affects whitening creams and lotions containing mercury and its derivatives, cortisone, Vitamin A or more than two percent hydroquinine, a lightening agent that is used to develop photographs.
According to reports from Ivory Coast, the ministry says cosmetic lightening and hygiene creams that de-pigment the skin are now forbidden. Speaking with AFP news, a member of Ivory Coast’s pharmaceutical authority, Christian Doudouko confirmed the percentage of people affected by the side effects is on the high side.
‘The number of people with side-effects caused by these medicines is really high,’ he said.
The UN Environment Programme study in 2008 states that the use of whitening creams in Africa is most widespread in Nigeria – where more than 75% of women buy them.
