Residents of Otukpo town in Benue State have lamented what they described as lack of portable water due to the shutdown of its main Water Works by an aggrieved contracting firm.
Daily Trust gathered that the contractor, CGC, sometime last year refurbished the Otobi Water Works at the cost of N2.6 billion, but was yet to be paid by the state government.
A resident, Ada Audu said the development has caused hardship for her household, which now depend on streams and wells for water.
"It has not been easy for us since the Water Works was sealed off. The well water we rely on is very reddish and not too good for consumption," she said.
Similarly, another resident of Eupi, George Elijah, called on relevant authorities to fix the problem in order to avert an epidemic.
"Government should not allow this situation to continue. We have been enjoying pipe borne water and suddenly, we are forced to drink water from wells, streams and ponds," he said.
Meanwhile, the state Commissioner for Water Resources, Comrade Wergba has said that the government is doing everything possible to resolve the issues with the company.
He attributed government's inability to pay the contractor to the dwindling allocation accruing to the state from the federation account.
Wergba however assure residents that the matter would be tackled very soon.
