Publishers of Guardian Newspapers are currently at the receiving
end of harsh criticisms over their recent report of Ebola case in Benue State.
The newspaper in a report by one Msugh Ityokura on Friday,
15 August 2014 claimed that the deadly disease has hit the Benue and Nasarawa
States.
However, contrary to the headline, there was no trace of Ebola
disease in Benue State in the content of story.
According to the report, “TRACES of Ebola outbreak has been
reported in some parts of Nasarawa state even as the state government has said
it is on top of the situation.”
“Sources told The Guardian that five people were taken to an
undisclosed hospital in the area after which series of tests carried out on
them indicated symptoms of Ebola.
Meanwhile, this report did not go down well with some persons
from Benue State who have been raining thunder and brimstone on the management
of the newspaper for failing to get its source right.
A visibly angry Enayi Ochogwu wrote on her wall: I have a
copy of Saturday guardian right on my table, read d said potion but seen no
report on Benue. Pls let us stop spreading news that won't help us or our
people abi dem swear 4 us?
And I pray that d disease will visit any one with such
motives this time around @ mike Obeya. But still on d matter, d said paper is
still on my desk and there is no mention of Benue except for d caption.
Another Akioyamen Josephine said: They know how to sell papers sha! The guy just made a jump
from Nassarawa to Benue. Diariz God oh.
Joachim Agbo How
comes our reportage are so unethical? Journalists have become so lazy that they
don't want to go the inch mile to verify their storylines. It's totally absurd
for a Nigerian journalist who knows the borderline of these two States to bring
up such caption. I could pardon a foreign reporter but not a Benue indigene who
knows the geographical difference between Benue and Nassarawa states.
Eliye Ahmed u dis krukre journalist how much will they
pay u to tanish the very land dat breed u,wetin pple dey find for benue pple
body that we can not rest, bafoon u are lucky i cant ci u i would 've given u
nordding with my head and reset dat ur empty brains obapko.
